A GEORGE III CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR

A GEORGE III CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR

An exceptional mid 18th century Chippendale period giltwood mirror retaining the original gilding.

The 18th century replaced mirror plate with opposing ho-ho birds above pierced scrolling foliate branches surmounted by a seated figure.

The pierced C- scroll apron centred by a swan.

Stylistically this mirror could be linked to two of England great mirror designers Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Johnson.

The carved swan and ho-ho birds suggest the work of Thomas Johnson.

Thomas Johnson published Twelve Gerandoles in circa 1755 and then another 53 designs in 1758 many of which incorporated animals.

As the designs of both Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Johnson were published and used by other makers it is not a certainty that either of these was the actual maker.

With that said the exaction and sophistication of the workmanship would indicate a leading carver.

English, Circa 1760

Note; The European seated figure as apposed to a chinoiserie figure is incredible rare.
