A REGENCY PERIOD ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY VIDE POCHE CENTRE TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO S. JAMAR

An early 19th century mahogany Vide Poche centre table in the French Empire style.

The rectangular tray top above a frieze drawer on one end and a dummy drawer apposing, raised on ormolu mounted column legs joined by a curved X-form stretcher above ball feet.

Jamar was almost certainly trained in Europe. By 1818 he was at 29 Wardour Street, Soho advertising his furniture in the french manner which he claimed was equal to any made in Paris.

In 1819 Jamar moved to 37 Gerrard Street, Soho where he continued to trade until 1826 he also opened a showroom in Liverpool advertising a display of superb French furniture from his manufacture.

His cabinet work is noteworthy for its carefully matched mahogany and rosewood veneers which serve as a foil for rich ormolu mounts, almost certainly imported from Paris.

A number of pieces have English locks inscribed S Jamar Cabinet Maker to Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland.
