AN EXCEPTIONAL & RARE CHIPPENDALE PERIOD MAHOGANY ARMCHAIR
English, circa 1760.
Dimensions:
Height: 100cm / 39 Inches
Width: 69cm / 27 Inches
An exceptional English mahogany armchair executed in the distinctive Chippendale tradition and closely following designs illustrated in Thomas Chippendale’s celebrated The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director, particularly Plates XXII and XXIII.
The chair is distinguished by its superb quality of carving and rich, deep mahogany patina. The elegant carved headrail, shaped arms, finely detailed legs and seat rails are complemented by particularly charming raised foliage carving to the inner faces of the front legs. Its slightly smaller proportions, compared with a standard Gainsborough-style chair, add considerably to its elegance and appeal. The chair retains what is believed to be its original 18th-century needlework upholstery. Comparable chairs are recorded in important collections, including a giltwood suite made by Chippendale for Sir Lawrence Dundas at Arlington House.
Provenance: Filoli, Li House, San Francisco, USA.
