AN INCREDIBLY RARE 18TH CENTURY baroque SCALLOP SHAPED MARBLE WINE CISTERN

A rare early 18th century scallop shaped marble wine cistern.

The scallop shape can traced back to ancient Greek and Roman culture. In Greek mythology the scollop shape represents Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty who was born from the sea and reached the shores of Cyprus on a scallop shell. In Roman culture the goddess Venus represented the same attributes. In Greek and Roman culture the shell or scollop signified fertility. As a consiquence the scallop shape has be used in art and architecture over two thousand years, including the painting Birth of Venus by Botticelli.
