A George III Satinwood Bonheur-du-Jour In the manner of George Simson

A fine George III satinwood bonheur-du-jour, the sliding and removable superstructure fitted with a pair of doors enclosing mahogany-beaded pigeonholes and a series of small drawers with ivory handles. The folding writing surface above a frieze drawer, with a further recessed drawer beneath.

The piece is finely inlaid throughout with narrow tulipwood bandings and stringing, the decoration complementing the finely figured West Indian satinwood veneers.

The design is closely comparable to a lady's secretary and cabinet by George Simson, illustrated in Christopher Gilbert's Pictorial Dictionary of Marked English Furniture, 1700–1840, p. 422, plate 840.
