Executed in the Jacobean Revival taste, the bold, square outline is beautifully balanced by the gently sloping shoulders of the aperture. Unusually restrained for the Gothic manner, the design avoids excessive ornamentation or delicate moulding instead, the decoration is confidently carved with a strong, architectural hand. The result is a handsome and well-proportioned chimneypiece of considerable character and presence, displaying both solidity and refinement in equal measure.
