A SUPERB GEORGE III MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESK

ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS OF LANCASTER & LONDON

A SUPERB GEORGE III MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESK ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS OF LANCASTER & LONDON

English, circa 1765/70.

A superb double sided George III Chippendale period mahogany pedestal desk. With a lovely flame mahogany top above three frieze drawers on one side and the reverse with a full width false drawer, with original locks, ormolu handles and escutcheons. The pedestals with drawers on one side and false cupboards the other. With a moulded plinth base and concealed castors. The desk has acquired an outstanding colour and patination and the quality of the timber is exceptional.

Note: A drawing by Gillows from 1779 in the Westminster City Archive illustrates a comparable fluted shaped apron. The carved oval Patera and fluting on the middle frieze drawer is comparable to a library table made by Gillows in 1785 for Thomas Gibbons, Ironmaster & banker of Wolverhampton. A side table supplied by Thomas Chippendale to the Lascelles family (Harewood House) circa 1770 also has comparable patera and fluting detail.

As this desk is double sided and finished on all four sides it will work perfectly in the middle of a room.
