A GEORGE III ELM, YEW & BEECH GOTHIC WINDSOR ARMCHAIR
English: Circa 1760
A mid 18th century windsor chair with a pointed arch-shaped back and fretwork splats displaying Gothic tracery above an elegant cabriole leg these chairs beautifully reflect the Gothic taste which became fashionable in England in the middle of the 18th century.
Provenance: Private collection Yorkshire.
Note: When describing this model of Windsor chair, Michael Harding-Hill author of Windsor Chairs 2003, “This is the Windsor chair at its most elaborate, a fine example of the Gothic so-called ‘Chippendale’ taste in country furniture. Note the fine tracery fretted splats, the well-formed cabriole legs."
