A George II Gilt and Gesso Landscape or Overmantel Mirror
English, circa 1735.
Dimensions:
47cm high
127cm wide
The rectangular triptych mirror plate is enclosed within a richly moulded frame, adorned with finely executed foliate detailing. The composition is further enhanced by boldly carved acanthus scrolls and delicate flowerheads. The use of gilt and gesso reflects the high-quality materials and techniques favoured in grand interiors during the first half of the 18th century.
A closely related example is illustrated in Graham Child’s World Mirrors 1650–1900 (p.85, pl.78).
Note; Lovely original surface. The mirror plates are associated 19th century mercury plates.
