A LARGE 19TH CENTURY DELFT VASE MOUNTED AS A LAMP

The baluster-shaped body is richly decorated in underglaze blue, green and iron-red enamels with colourful birds amongst flowering branches, all beneath a traditional tin-glazed finish.
The vase is raised on an elegant 19th Century French ormolu base, creating a refined and highly decorative lighting piece. The decoration reflects the enduring influence of chinoiserie, a style that captivated European patrons from the late 17th Century onwards.
Inspired by the arrival of Chinese porcelain through expanding global trade, Delft potters developed their own imaginative interpretations of Eastern decorative art. Rather than depicting authentic Chinese life, these romanticised scenes combined motifs borrowed from imported porcelain, European engravings and the artists' own creativity, resulting in compositions that celebrated the perceived elegance and exoticism of the East. Dutch Delftware remains celebrated for its crisp white tin glaze and vibrant hand-painted decoration, and this vase is an excellent example of the quality achieved during the first half of the 19th Century. Its harmonious palette and finely executed decoration make it both a significant decorative object and a practical lamp, equally at home in a period setting or a contemporary interior.
