An Exceptional Large Early 19th-Century Giltwood Convex Mirror
English, circa 1820.
Dimensions:
Height: 143 cm
Width: 75 cm
An exceptional and imposing early 19th-century giltwood convex mirror of remarkable scale and fine quality. Retaining its original convex mirror plate, the glass is framed by an ebonised reeded slip and a finely carved waterleaf moulding, followed by a concave moulding applied with giltwood balls and a further moulded border.
The bold architectural frame is surmounted by an ebonised spread-winged eagle, holding a chain with a giltwood ball and tassels in its beak. The lower section is enriched with finely carved dolphins, a pendant acanthus-leaf apron and elaborate acanthus-leaf cresting, displaying the confident carving and richly decorative character associated with the finest English Regency mirrors.
