A Rare George II Stone-Painted Oval Mirror
in the manner of William Kent

English, circa 1740.

A highly unusual and rare mid-eighteenth century carved oval mirror, dating to the George II period, and executed in the manner of William Kent. The finely carved and moulded frame is richly ornamented with acanthus leaf decoration and flanked by boldly rendered “Jupiter’s sacred oak” motifs to either side, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and a strong architectural influence typical of the period.

The design relates closely to a drawing produced by John Vardy in 1744, reinforcing its connection to leading mid-18th century design practices.
