An elegant early 19th-century mahogany side table of fine proportions, featuring a single frieze drawer and raised on slender legs. The table is crafted from exceptional quality mahogany, displaying a rich, well-developed colour and attractive figuring, enhanced by a desirable aged patina.

Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London, one of the most respected English cabinet-making firms of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the piece reflects their reputation for combining practicality with refined craftsmanship. Gillows were particularly noted for their use of superior West Indian mahogany and innovative construction techniques.

Founded in Lancaster, the firm expanded to Oxford Street, London in 1769, establishing a thriving dual-centre operation. Despite their scale, demand often exceeded capacity, leading to a network of associated workshops across northern England.

Gillows furniture is frequently distinguished by its understated quality and attention to detail, often incorporating advanced fittings such as the celebrated locks designed by Joseph Bramah in 1784. The firm also adopted a system of stamped identification marks from circa 1780, applied discreetly by individual craftsmen.

With an esteemed client base that included prominent aristocratic families, such as those of Eaton Hall and Tatton Park, Gillows pieces remain highly regarded for their craftsmanship, durability, and timeless design.
