A very rare and imposing mid-19th-century terracotta Armorial by the celebrated Victorian manufacturer Mark Henry Blanchard.

The modelling is bold and confident, reflecting Blanchard’s mastery of large-scale terracotta and his close association with the traditions of the Coade Factory.
Mark Henry Blanchard was born in Portsea, Hampshire, in 1817 and was apprenticed at the Coade Factory in Lambeth during its final years.

Around 1840 he established his own manufactory on Blackfriars Road, later acquiring a number of Coade moulds following their sale at auction in 1843.
Blanchard went on to become one of the foremost Victorian terracotta manufacturers, producing vases, statuary, busts, and significant architectural ornament.
His achievements were recognised at the Great Exhibition of 1851, where his work attracted considerable acclaim.
Major commissions included architectural ornament for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the celebrated ‘Months’ panels for the Wedgwood Institute, Burslem.

A superb and rare example of Victorian decorative terracotta, combining sculptural ambition with exceptional craftsmanship.
